Welcome To Springhaven Kennels

Dedicated Breeder of AKC Newfoundland Dogs

We have a special announcement for our puppy owners and friends. After 32 years of breeding Newfoundlands we have made the decision that it is time for us to retire. When we began this incredible adventure we had no idea of how far it would ultimately take us. There have been highs, lows, excitement and despair, more than we ever could have imagined. We are grateful for the support from family, friends and especially our puppy owners during more than three decades of loving these amazing Newfoundland dogs. It's been a labor of love and we don’t regret a moment. To our current owners be assured that we will always be available for advice and support.

We have several adults available for adoption, please contact us for further information.

Upon occasion I become aware of significant information that I believe should be shared with others. I recently read an article (university study) on the increased risk of bone cancer in large/ giant breed dogs when neutered or spayed before one year. The reason this study is so important is that according to Dr Stephen Ettinger (Board Certified Internist, Cardiologist, author of veterinary text books) osteosarcoma is the currently the number one cause of death in giant breed dogs. How valuable to know that something as simple as delaying neuter/ spay surgery can help reduce the risk! Puppy owners may want to print out a copy of this study to give to their vet before they schedule an appointment to neuter/ spay their young dog. You can find the article at the link indicated here or go to the bottom of this page where you can click on the link.

1.  We are proud to announce that we have been officially recognized as a Breeder of Merit by the American Kennel Club!

2. Congratulations to Springhaven's Casey Station for earning his Canine Good Citizen certificate and AKC CD (Companion Dog Degree for basic obedience)! Casey is co-owned with Priscilla Hensel who is busy training Casey for future working titles.

3. Concerned about recalls of pet food and want a safer alternative? Email me for a copy of the Nature's Farmacy User Friendly Homemade Diet For Dogs & Cats. There is no charge for the information and you don't have to own or buy one of my puppies to make the request! It should give you some insight into alternatives to processed dog foods and its an opportunity to learn more about raw/ homemade diets.

4. Need a vet good with giant breed dogs? Stop by page two (scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page) for information on veterinarians in the Los Angeles area. All are familiar with Newfoundlands and get a five lick rating by the Springhaven furries!

5. With the spiraling cost of veterinarian care for dogs we are now suggesting owners consider pet health insurance.  After reviewing the current options available our recommendation is the PurinaCare Pet Health Insurance.  Their two most popular plans cover most injuries and illnesses, including those caused by hereditary conditions - the only exclusion is preexisting conditions.  They offer a choice of annual deductibles and co-payments.  You can visit their website for further information, to get a quote, or talk to an agent.  We feel this is a good investment in the future health of your puppy/ dog.  Their website is www.purinacare.com or you can call them at 866-787-7676.

6. Check out all our newly hip and elbow certified Newfs on the OFA website. While on the subject of OFA, this would be a good time to take a few minutes to check us out on the OFA website at www.offa.org or click on the link at the bottom of this page. Type Springhaven in search at the top of the page to see all of our certified Newfs. Hint, at the same time you can research any other breeder you may be considering for that special addition to your family. Just type their kennel name in search and click to see the results.

7. While you're here be sure to stop by page two for the latest litter/ puppy information.

8. Don't miss page three, the "Why and How" of our raw feeding program. Check out the newest link to Weston A. Price Foundation for more information about raw feeding and the trend towards home prepared diets. Be sure to take the time to read about Pottenger's Cats.

8. Also, Buyer Beware and The Price of Pups on page two.

We have plenty to see and much to read, so stay awhile and remember to check back often!

Who Is Springhaven?

We have owned Newfoundlands since 1975, have been breeding and showing since 1980 and have produced AKC Best in Show, Group winners, placers, Specialty winners and the number one Newf in the U.S. for two years. In addition to many AKC Champions, we have also bred Newfs that have earned a degree in obedience, draft and/or water work. Many of our Newfs are in pet homes and will never see the conformation or obedience ring, but be loving companions. We are members of the Newfoundland Club Of America and have been on the club's Breeders List since 1984. We feel very strongly that a breeder's responsibility is educating potential buyers about the breed. Not just selling puppies!

Our Newfoundlands are our passion. We are dedicated to the breed and are determined that we will make it better by our participation. We have worked very hard and made difficult decisions that have brought us to this point in time. We are proud of what we have accomplished! Each generation has been a stepping stone to improve on the past. Breeding healthy Newfs that are sound of mind and body is our first priority - while maintaining proper breed type and conformation. Our breeding stock is OFA certified. This means our dogs have been certified free of hip and elbow dysplasia by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. Since dysplasia is a serious inherited problem in the breed, you can easily see the importance of buying a pup from OFA certified parents, with certified grandparents and ancestors in their pedigrees. Additionally, we test for cystinuria so that we are certain that our puppies will not be affected. Another significant problem in the breed is an inherited heart murmur referred to as a stenosis. This is an untreatable heart condition that can significantly shorten the life of a dog. Depending on the severity, many affected pups die anywhere from four months to one or two years. The risk of getting a puppy with an inherited or congenital heart problem can be eliminated by buying one that has been heart checked by a certified cardiologist. Unfortunately general practice vets are not skilled to detect subtle murmurs - most are missed, only to be discovered by the new owners vet some time later. All of our pups are thoroughly checked by our certified cardiologist before they are released to their new homes.

The most common color is black, we also occasionally have white and black (Landseer) puppies. Our Newfie puppies are sold with a written guarantee, are current on vaccinations and worming. We also supply a puppy packet with three pages of dietary recommendations, plus other valuable information including housebreaking tips, grooming, crate training, etc. And of course all our pups come with a life time of free "technical" support! A deposit is required to reserve a puppy. We are experienced shipping world-wide.

Acquiring a dog must be a whole family decision with the intention of keeping the dog for the whole of its natural life. Some people are attracted by the fluffy "Teddy Bear" image of the Newfie puppy and forget that it will be a BIG dog. He needs love, good food and space and time for exercise and grooming. Newfs do not make good outdoor dogs - they love their family and need to be an active member of it. Before buying a pup, be sure that you understand the characteristics and inherited problems of the breed. In order to make an intelligent decision if a Newf is for you, obtain as much information as possible, never be in a hurry! Remember this dog will be a part of your family for many years and you want to take the necessary time to research before adding a Newf to your life. The initial investment is only a small portion of what will be spent on your new puppy over it's lifetime! Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Thank you for visiting the Springhaven Kennels home page.
